Valency

The valency of a particular element refers to the number of atoms of that element that combine with atoms of another element to form a molecule. It represents the combined energy of an atom. An atom’s outer shell is determined by the number of electrons.

That is, valency is a measure of an atom’s ability to bond with other atoms. The valency number is calculated by the gain, loss, or share of electrons in an atom’s outer shell.
